Desde temprana edad, Joel se ha sentido fascinado por el dibujo, la pintura y la escultura. Pero no fue hasta su primer año de instituto que se introduce en la fotografía. Para cuando comenzó la universidad, su pasión por el proceso fotográfico le absorbía completamente. En 1984 Joel se gradúa por la Universidad de Arizona con una Licenciatura de Bellas Artes en Fotografía y pronto establece un estudio comercial en Denver Colorado.

Por más de 26 años Joel ha trabajado para muchas de las más importantes agencias de publicidad de todo el mundo, para clientes como AARP, Abbott Labs, Arizona Office of Tourism, AT&T, Febreze, Goldman Sachs, Hewlett Packard, Hyatt, Qwest, Sony, Sturm Ruger & Co, Visa, Volvo, y más recientemente Red Bull. A lo largo de los años sus encargos los han llevado a recorrer todos los Estados Unidos de América y más de cincuenta países a lo largo del globo.

En 1990 Joel produce su primer libro de gran formato, “Navajo, Retrato de una Nación” que recibe numerosos premios de fotografía y diseño y es expuesto en el museo de Historia Americana Smithsonian por dieciocho meses.

Conducido por el proceso creativo, Joel se ve como un ilusionista, creando realmente impresionantes. Joel también es embajador del proceso fotográfico por medio de la realización de conferencias y talleres de trabajo por todo Estados Unidos.

From an early age Joel Grimes had a fascination with drawing, painting and sculpting. But it wasn’t until his freshman year in high school that he was first introduced to photography. By the time he began college, his passion for the photographic process was all consuming. In 1984 Joel graduated from the University of Arizona with a BFA in Photography and soon established a commercial studio working out of Denver Colorado.

For over 26 years Joel has worked for many of the top advertising agencies across the globe for clients such as AARP, Abbott Labs, Arizona Office of Tourism, AT&T, Febreze, Goldman Sachs, Hewlett Packard, Hyatt, Qwest, Sony, Sturm Ruger & Co, Visa, Volvo, and most recently Red Bull. Over the years his assignments have taken him to every state across the USA and to over fifty countries around the globe.

In 1990 Joel produced his first coffee table book, ‘Navajo, Portrait of a Nation’ which received a number of photographic and design awards and produce an eighteen-month solo exhibit at the Smithsonian American History museum.

Driven by the creative process, Joel views himself as an illusionist, creating portraits larger than life. Joel is also an ambassador for the photographic process by teaching workshops and lectures across the country. “I feel that by being an open book with my process I have an opportunity to inspire others to follow their dreams and passions to create”.

Currently, Joel resides between Tucson and Los Angeles with his wife and their four children.

DAVID LACHAPELLE

“People say photographs don’t lie, mine do.”

David LaChapelle (nacido el 11 de marzo de 1963 en Fairfield, Connecticut, Estados Unidos) es fotógrafo y director de moda y publicidad, y es famoso por su estilo surrealista, único y humorístico en algunas ocasiones. Es conocido por ser el actor principal en el mundo de la fotografía de moda.

LaChapelle asistió a la Escuela de las Artes de Carolina del Norte y a la Escuela de Artes Visuales de Nueva York. Su primera fotografía fue de su madre soltera, Helga LaChapelle, durante unas vacaciones familiares en Puerto Rico. Ella llevaba un bikini y sostenía una copa de Martini en un balcón. Desde entonces se obsesionó con la fotografía.

La carrera profesional de David comienza en las galerías de Nueva York en los 80. David LaChapelle (born March 11, 1963 Fairfield, Connecticut, United States) is a photographer and director who works in the fields of fashion, advertising, and fine art photography, and is noted for his surreal, unique and often humorous style. Known to be major player in the fashion photography world.

LaChapelle attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His first photograph was of his single mother, Helga LaChapelle, on a family vacation in Puerto Rico. She wore a bikini and held a martini glass on a balcony. From then on he was obsessed with photography.

David LaChapelle’s photography career began in the 1980’s in New York City galleries. After attending the North Carolina School of Arts, he moved to New York where he enrolled at both the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts. With shows at 303 Gallery, Trabia McAffee and others, his work caught the eye of his hero Andy Warhol and the editors of Interview Magazine, who offered him his first professional photography job.

Working at Interview Magazine, LaChapelle quickly began photographing some of the most famous faces of the times. Before long, he was shooting for the top editorial publications of the world, and creating the most memorable advertising campaigns of a generation. His striking images have appeared on and in between the covers of magazines such as Italian Vogue, French Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Rolling Stone and i-D. JAIME IBARRA

“I did not read any books. I did not take any classes. I did not compare myself to other photographers. I did not want to learn the rules, because I feel rules can imprison me, creatively. I made a lot of mistakes. But I learned… rather a lot.”

Nacido en España, Jaime creció en Australia, lo que explica su divertido acento. Desde noviembre de 2007, es un feliz residente de Austin, TX (USA).

Jaime es fotógrafo profesional de retratos, pero también es conocido por sus trabajos en los campos editorial, moda, comercial o publicidad. Se considera más un estudioso del comportamiento humano que un fotógrafo. Armado con su Canon 5D MKII fusionada a un 50mm f1.8, Jaime realiza la mayoría de sus fotos con luz natural, recurriendo sólo a la luz artificial de un estudio si la situación lo requiere.

Jaime tiene Synaesthesia (“syn” – junto, “aethesia” – sensación): una condición neuronal, en la cual la estimulación de un sentido conduce a experiencias automáticas e involuntarias en un segundo sentido. Como si hubiera un cable cruzado entre sentidos…un sentido estimula a otro no relacionado normalmente. Por ejemplo, la música puede ser “vista” en colores y patrones, o el gusto puede ser visto en formas, letras y números pueden tener texturas, etc.

En el caso de nos ocupa, Jaime puede oir colores, casi como si fueran notas musicales. Combinaciones de colores son como combinaciones de notas, y conforman acordes…y como en la música, algunos acordes son disonantes y tensos… y algunos son complejos y hermosos. En su trabajo (más o menos), Jaime sólo elige los colores que componen juntos la música más agradable. Aunque esto se considera una “condición”, a él le gusta pensar en ello como en un “superpoder”.

Su “estilo” es la mezcla visual de más de 15 años en diseño gráfico, 25 años de componer y realizar música, muchos años invertidos en viajar alrededor del planeta, insomnio, una fascinación inquebrantable hacia las personas, una imaginación hiperactiva y una obsesiva necesidad de crear.

Todo suma. De algún modo.

He was originally built in Spain, but he grew up in Australia: it’s complicated, but it explains the funny accent. He has been a happy resident of Austin, TX (USA) since November 2007.

He is a Professional Portrait/Art Photographer, but he is also known to do Editorial, Fashion, Commercial and Advertising work. Jaime considers himself more of a human behaviorist than a photographer. Armed with his trusted Canon 5D MKII coupled together with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, Jaime would do most of his photo shoots in natural / available light – only to use artificial (studio) lighting if necessary.

He have Synaesthesia (“syn” – joined, “aethesia” – sense): a neurological condition, in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. Kind of like a wire is crossed between senses…one sense triggers another in a normally unrelated manner. For example, music might be “seen” in colours and patterns, or taste may be seen in shapes, letters and numbers may have textures, etc.

In his case, he hear colours, almost as-if they were musical notes. Combinations of colours are like combinations of notes, and become chords…and just as in music, some chords are dissonant, and tense…and some chords are complex and beautiful. In his work (more-or-less), he just choose colours that make the nicest music together. Although this is considered a “condition”, he like to think of it as a Super-Power.

His ‘style’ is the visual amalgamation of over 15 years in Graphic Design, 25 years of composing & performing music, many years spent traveling around the planet, a lifetime of over-romanticizing things, insomnia, an unfaltering fascination with humans, a hyperactive imagination, and an obsessive need to create.

It all adds up. Somehow.

EMILIO MORENATTI

“Creo que hay muchas maneras de contar el conflicto, lo importante es saber cómo llegar y cómo contar aquello que estamos viendo. Éste es reto: contar historias sin caer en la crueldad innecesaria, en los tópicos o en el tedio absoluto.”

Nacido en Zaragoza en 1966, pero criado en Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), Emilio Morenatti empieza su carrera como fotoperiodista en un periódico local de Jerez de la Frontera, España, mientras continúa sus estudios de delineante.

En 1992, se une a la Agencia EFE, la agencia de noticias líder en España, y se traslada a Sevilla. Desde allí cubre una gran variedad de eventos nacionales e internacionales, incluidos muchos Juegos Olímpicos y la guerra de Iraq de 2002.

A finales de 2003 va a Afganistán como corresponsal para The Associated Press (AP). Se establece en Kabúl y cubre el proceso de democratización del país tras la caída del régimen talibán. En 2005 es enviado por la misma agencia a cubrir el conflicto de Oriente Medio desde Gaza y Jerusalén.

En 2006, mientras cubre el conflicto en la ciudad Gaza, es secuestrado y puesto en libertad ileso al día siguiente. Pasó un periodo establecido en Pakistán y cubrió Asia Central para the Associated Press.

En 2009, fue uno de los dos fotoperiodistas de Associated Press (junto a dos soldados norteamericanos) que cayeron gravemente heridos en Afganistán cuando su vehículo pisó una mina situada en medio del desierto. Perdió su pierna izquierda en la explosión y fue evacuado a un hospital en Dubai. Ahora reside en Barcelona.

Emilio ha recibido, entre muchos otros premios, una mención de honor en el World Press Photo 2007 y es el primer español en ser nombrado fotógrafo del año en la categoría de periódicos en el certamen Pictures of the Year International (POYI) 2008. Recientemente ha ganado el primer premio FotoPres’09 por su trabajo sobre la violencia de género en Pakistán. FotoPres es el galardón con mejor asignación económica de España para fotografía documental.

Emilio Morenatti began his career in photojournalism at a local newspaper in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, while studying to be a draughtsman.

In 1992, he joined Agencia EFE, the leading Spanish news agency, and moved to Sevilla. From there he covered a variety of national and international events, including several Olympic Games and the 2002 Iraq War.

At the end of 2003 he went to Afghanistan as a correspondent for The Associated Press. Based in Kabul, he covered the democratic process in the country after the fall of the Taliban regime. In 2005, AP sent him to cover the Middle East conflict from Gaza and Jerusalem.

In 2006, while covering the conflict in Gaza City, he was kidnapped by gunmen before being released unharmed a day later. He was currently based in Pakistan and covered Central Asia for the Associated Press. He was named 2008 Newspaper Photographer of the Year by Pictures of the Year International.

In 2009, he was one of two Associated Press journalists (and two U.S. soldiers) seriously injured in Afghanistan when their vehicle ran over a bomb planted in the open desert. He lost his left foot in the explosion, and was flown to a hospital in Dubai. He is now based in Barcelona.

Morenatti’s many accolades include prizes in The Fuji European Press Awards 1996 and The National Headliner Awards 2005 and 2006. He has won the large market Photojournalist of the Year award in the 2010 Best of Photojournalism competition, sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association.

Annie Leibovitz nació en Connecticut, Estados Unidos, en 1949 y comenzó a fotografiar para la revista Rolling Stone en 1969 mientras todavía estudiaba en el San Francisco Art Institute. Famosa por su icónicas imágenes de famosos, como John Lennon y Yoko Ono, Arnold Schwarzenegger y Hillary Clinton, en 1983 se convierte en la fotógrafa jefe de Vanity Fair. Trabaja también como colaboradora habitual de Vogue, ha ganado numerosos premios y sus exposiciones han dado la vuelta al mundo.

Es autora de numerosos libros, como Women (1999), con un ensayo de Susan Sontag, American Music (2003), con textos de Patti Smith y Roseanne Cash, o A Photographer’s Life: 1990-2005 (2006). Además de su reconocido trabajo como retratista, Annie también ha documentado a mujeres maltratadas o los conflictos de Sarajevo, Bosnia y Rwanda.

En 2005 American Photo la nombra la fotógrafa más influyente en la actualidad.
